The Liberal Party (PL) has decided to back President Paul Kagame to lead the country once again ahead of the upcoming presidential polls slated for August 4th, 2017
The decision was taken by the party member representatives, hours shortly after discussions held at the party’s General Assembly held in Kigali on Sunday, June 4th, 2017.
The decision came after each of the party representatives from all provinces of the country shared their views before the party’s board and other invited parties’ representatives at the General Assembly and all decided to support President Kagame at the upcoming elections basing on what he has served the country during the last two terms.
Some praised Kagame for promoting health sector for a healthy community through different policies like health advisor who played a key role in reducing infant death rate.
Other have given the fact that the Girinka policy which was introduced under Kagame’s will has helped the vulnerable communities wave farewell to the poverty, and said, good bye to grass-roofed houses.
All these suggestions were collected together and the PL members were asked whether they will provide their own candidate to represent their party ahead of the presidential elections or if they will support Kagame during the coming presidential campaign.
And, at the end, they all opted to back president Kagame after they were all asked to stand up to show that they will support him.
Hon. Donatille Mukabalisa, the PL president said the decision was taken by the party members in a democratic way that usually shapes the party, where none of them was forced against the decision.
She said, “As this is a liberal party we let the party members feel free to express their views. The decision was therefore taken by the members and they have a number of reasons they based on to back president Kagame”
Mukabalisa added that not being led by president Kagame in the community and PL members’ wish would be a big blow and loss.
“we, all Rwandans, have benefits of being led by president Kagame who made us achieve a lot and we still want him to lead used in our journey to more achiements,” she said.
She admits the party can still contest for the presidential place for the next occasions but says this could be a special one, given the way people shouted for the 101 constitutional article change so that President Kagame can be handed more chances to lead the country, which they voted for, through referendum polls.
Kagame is now free to contest for presidential spot once again.
“This term could be special. It was asked by a big number of Rwandans and we are still wondering about it in big numbers. So, when time calls, we will continue the way we started,” she said.
Different authorities have appreciated PL community’s decision, and believe they will keep having a good relationship with their communities, since they are in a shared vision.
Marie Claire Uwamariya, the vice-Mayor of Musanze District in charge of Social Affairs, said the decision will help her successfully appear before the district community and share with them different views in an environment of common understanding.
This decision has added more strength in me where a citizen him/herself has a hand in decision-making and is basically influential in good governance while they feel comfortable in enjoying a proud leadership with the same vision, objective. It is an amazing sense of felling that I am enjoying right now,” she said.
This means that PL and PSD are without a candidate in the upcoming presidential elections as they all decided to back president Kagame like they both in 2010 elections.
Both parties were founded in 1991, during the political parties’ movements against former president Juvenal Habyarimana and his party on the then rule MRND until they defeated him.
