A picture of the Rwandan economy in twenty years after the Genocide against the Tutsi was an instance of fast and unexpected recovery in the world within only two decades. The country that experienced negative growth during and after the Genocide that left over one million people dead and thousands more displaced, is today one of the fastest growing economies in the world.
The country initiates poverty reduction strategies aimed at economic development growth. The initiatives like EDPRS I, EDPRS II and Vision 2020 among others have been doing more to increase the country’s development over the past two decades.
The financial sector continues to record impressive growth, improving access to development finance and financial services that have helped the country reduce poverty among the population and growth.
When looking back 2016 before its closing stages many have been realised mainly infrastructure sectors, foreign cooperation, tourism among others improved with well turned-out facts.
In July, President Paul Kagame launched Kigali Convention Centre (KCC) an ultra-modern facility located in Kigali, the complex that hosted the 27th African Union Summit that kicks off on July 10. It operated with international hotel chain Radisson Blu, under the brand Radisson Blu Hotel and Convention Centre Kigali.

The KCC Valued at over $300 million (about Rwf223 billion), the centre comprises a five-star hotel with 292 rooms, a conference hall that can host up to 2,500 people, several other meeting rooms, as well as an office park.
The 2016 leaves Kigali Marriot Hotel, the first sub-Saharian Marriot International. Peter Mukulu, Kigali Marriott’s Director of Sales and Marketing told TNT that Rwanda is the country holds a lot of promise. “This marks the beginning of an exciting journey for the hospitality sector. Our presence here sets the stage for making travel brilliant.”
Two marvelous complex buildings inaugurated in Kigali namely Champion Investment Corporation (CHIC) Complex and Kigali Heights, The Complexes that cost Rwf 20 billion and Rwf 30 billion respectively. CHIC complex built by an association of 56 Rwandans running various businesses, both edifices help in creating commercial space and adding to the city’s evolving skyline.
The one and only national carrier RwandAir introduces brand new Airbus 330-200, proudly nicknamed ‘Ubumwe’ (unity); the aircraft claimed to be the first of its kind in East Africa aimed at boost RwandAir’s capacity to expand its wings globally.

The 274-seater, wide-bodied Airbus 330-300 nicknamed ‘Umurage’; another aircraft strengthen RwandAir Plans to enter the US and European aviation markets and another new aircraft nicknamed ‘Kalisimbi’ as well.
Kagame visit to Morocco strengthen bilateral ties between two countries which led to reciprocal visit of King Mohammed VI, the visit contributed a lot to both relation and cooperation. The two countries signed various memorandum of understanding (MOU) as Morocco’s Attijariwafa Bank signs deal to buy Rwanda’s Cogebanque and Moroccan pharmaceutical company signed a deal that paves way for construction of a plant in Rwanda to manufacture antibiotics.
In Sports, Rwanda hosted the 4th edition of 2016 African Nations Championship, the biennial international football championship organised by the Confederation of African Football. The tournament held in Rwanda between 16 January and 7 February 2016, a total of 16 teams played in the tournament while Rwanda knocked out in quarter final by DR Congo which later on raised the trophy.
In spite of the overall achievements, Rwanda dominated so far this year with complains of droughts upsurge especially in Eastern zone as some residents survived on little support of foods from government while others emigrated towards neighbouring countries to survive.
