As France is nearing presidential elections, the international League against_Racism and Anti-Semitism (LICRA) has asked current French President Francois Hollande to file all documents holding information about all activities done by the French mission in Rwanda between 1990 and 1994.
According to Radio France Internationale (RFI), the League has asked Hollande to hand in these documents after the current presidential candidates use the information in these documents as a card which can lead them to the presidential elections victory.
One of the presidential candidates Emmanuel Macron has recently been called to share information about this issue.
It is 23 years now since Rwanda has recovered from the tragedy of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi which saw over a million of Tutsi killed in only 100 days, and France has long been accused of getting involved in the Tutsi Genocide by training the Interahamwe militias. However, France has denied such claims.
LICRA also accuses France of rushing to revealing Rwandans who had a hand in committing Genocide against Tutsi but fails to reveal its French soldiers who are suspected to have been involved in Genocide during their mission in Rwanda.
In 2016, the National Commission for the Fight against Genocide (CNLG) has filed in France a list of 20 French soldiers suspected for having been involved in Genocide against the Tutsi but France refused to investigate on these soldiers and the League want Hollande to provide information on these soldiers’ files before he leaves the Presidency office.
In the same year, French court has taken to justice three Rwandan Genocide suspects, including Pascal Simbikangwa on Genocide crimes he committed in Kigali City, and LICRA has followed the court proceedings during his trial since its beginning.
The League accuses France of only focusing on showing the whereabouts of Rwandan Genocide suspects but fails to admit the French army’s involvement in Genocide against Tutsi.
It is 20 years on since different researchers and witnesses have asked France to explain its role in Tutsi Genocide and report the archived documents on Rwanda during Genocide period, which are still held by the French Government.
The League says that France holds the documents on designed partnerships with Great Lakes countries, especially Rwanda, in politics, army, financial supports and other activities done during the past years
“we have enough and exceptional facts that France has had a major hand in human rights violation crimes and kept holding information on its individuals who were involved in such crimes, which resulted to increasing temper from the countries which are putting pressure on France to reveal the criminals to testify what they did to facilitate the justice an help to build global peace and reconciliation” declares the League statement.
“Francois Hollande and his compatriots should open doors and windows and reveal the truth and let people know what happened before his term ends”
Should Hollande not reveal the truth about what the league want him to, it will up to his successor to succeed where his predecessor has failed.
LICRA has asked the presidential candidates to provide information and their points of view on this issue in order to reveal the truth on the human rights violation crimes that France has long been accused for years on.
