Burera: Local leaders warn male chauvinist

The vice mayor of Burera District in charge of economic development, Evariste Habumuremyi has called upon the residents to live in harmony and share information in real time on domestic conflicts or violence in their localities.

In a community meeting that brought together about 200 residents of Ruhanga Cell in Rurasabuye Sector, last week, Habumuremyi reminded them that properties belong to the family and not an individual.

He was reacting to tendencies of men, who misuse or sell family property without knowledge or consent of their spouses, which is one of the causes of domestic conflicts.

Other causes of domestic violence include drunkenness, drug abuse, male chauvinism, adultery and family abandonment.

“If you feel your rights have been violated, Police and local leaders are always around to help you; there is no reason, whatsoever, for you to take matters in your own hands,”Habumuremyi, warning especially men who are found of mistreating and assaulting their spouses because of “male chauvinism.”

Jeanette Iyakaremye, who is in charge of gender and family promotion in Burera, appealed to them to actively take part in the ‘Umugoroba w’ababyeyi’ literally meaning  ‘an evening gathering  of parents’ where such issues of conflicts and others affecting families and community development are discussed and addressed appropriately.

Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Phelin Nshimiyumukiza, the District Community Liaison Officer, however, noted that there has been a reduction in cases related to domestic conflicts, but added that “even one case has its negative impact.”

He was quick to note that timely information sharing which  has been a vital tool in preventing domestic violence where identified affected families have been approached and their issues ironed out.
