Burundi: 8 Rwandans sentenced to 10 years in prison

The high court of Kayanza province sentenced 8 Rwandans after being convicted of crossing border without travelling documents.

They were all arrested at Ryamukoma hill, Commune Kabarore in Kayanza province, and are an addition to other 12 Rwandans who are jailed in Ngozi prison, having been arrested for illegal exportation of Burundian coffee to Rwanda.

They are other reports saying that a lorry, carrying about 26 tons of beans to Tanzania, have been confiscated to the border of Burundi and Tanzania. A Rwandan, driver of this lorry, was also sentenced to 5 years in prison, and the lorry confiscated by the Burundian government.

The high court of Muyinga which tried this case, ordered that the beans which were to be exported to Tanzania be distributed among Burundian needy people.

Rwandans continue to face troubles in Burundi following a breakdown of bilateral relations of those countries. This is also happening in coincidence of allegations accusing Rwanda to mar the security in Burundi but the government of Rwanda vehemently denies the allegations.
