Former Secretary General of the East African Community and a Rwandan Minister of health, Dr Richard Sezibera wins southern province election to take over the position of late senate; Mucyo Jean de Dieu who passed on early October 2016.
Five candidates competed for the position in yesterday final poll include front running Dr Richard Sezibera with 317 votes equivalent to 63.9 %, Mukakarera Monique with 73 equivalent to 14.7%.
Other candidates includes a University of Rwanda’s lecturer Dr Masabo Francois won only 59 votes equivalent to 11%, Mukamuganga Veneranda with 28 votes equivalent to 5.6% and Muhimakazi Félicité won only 19 votes equivalent to 3.8%.
The chamber of senate in Rwanda parliament consists of 26 members, twelve MPs from all provinces and city of Kigali; representatives from universities and other MPs nominated by His Excellency. Thus, Southern Province actually represented by three senates needs to feel the gap of late Mucyo.
The National electoral Commission is due to officially announce Sezibera win on 6th December 2016, the third senate to represent Southern province.
Richard Sezibera who was born on 5th June 1964 in Kigali-Rwanda, is a Rwandan physician, politician, diplomat and civil servant. The 4th Secretary General of the East African Community, received his early education in Burundi.
In 1984, he entered Makerere University Medical School in Kampala, Uganda, graduating with the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 1989. Later, he obtained the degree of Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from Georgetown University in the United States.
