Green Party’s Frank Habineza says he was really surprised with the elections outcomes after losing the race with a heavy defeat to Paul Kagame, and even independent candidate Mpayimana, hinting the threat that he could resign from politics.
Currently chairing the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda (DGP),DrHabinezatold BBC that he was surprised by elections results and felt not happy with the votes he scored, at only 0.36 per cent during the just concluded presidential elections resumed in favor of Kagame.
He said, “We were not happy with the elections outcomes but we had to accept them as democrats”.
Asked what has been the most disappointing for him, Habineza said, “we were confident to win elections at, at least, 65 per cent of votes, but we got zero point something. More to that, we lost to someone who had not been for even a year in Rwanda. We were really surprised”.
He was also asked if he doubts the polls results, but quickly refused to comment on it and rather said he is not the National Elections Commission, and insisted on some challenges he, and his party members, faced during the campaigns while also pointing out that the party’s observers were not facilitated to observe elections process accordingly, despite beiong allowed to enter the polling rooms.
But when asked if this might have affected his chances of winning elections, Habineza said he has no idea about it but insisted that he was not happy with all these issues.
Back to the fact that he even lost to Mpayimana, who spent less time in Rwandan politics than he does, Habineza said it was all about heavenly dilemma.
He said, “ It is something I am still thinking about. Last time I was even thinking of quitting politics, I even thought of resigning from my political party and I am still thinking about both issues”.
Asked if elections loss are the reason of his attempt to quit politics, he said he was shocked with the defeat and revealed that he already talked to party he was representing during the elections but he is yet to get the answer.
“But I wish others can keep ruling the party. I feel very weak after the loss and I do not have any determination to continue”.
