The Commissioner for Human Resources and Development at Rwanda National Police (RNP) Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Yahaya Kamunuga has told gender focal point officers to always place discipline ahead of anything while handling cases gender related cases.
He made the remarks while officiating at a one day consultative meeting of 52 gender focal points police officers from from different units, held at RNP General Headquarters, yesterday.
The Commissioner told officers that, in order to effectively deliver on their tasks and responsibilities, they ought to always consider the force’s core values, particularly discipline.
The consultative meeting is in line with RNP’s vision of making an impact in gender mainstreaming, efforts to promote gender equality and fight against Gender Based Violence.
It is also intended to increase the capacity of women and men for better their understanding on gender equality and strengthening the capacities of RNP gender focal persons.
In her tutorial that she delivered to the officers, the Director of Gender Promotion at RNP, Superintendent of Police (SP) Pelagie Dusabe said that the focal points usually play a strategic role in internal and external gender mainstreaming and in the implementation of related policies and procedures.
SP Dusabe further said that, “ The objective of the meeting is to discuss challenges faced by gender focal point officers in performing duties in their respective units, and review their roles so as to continuously improve their performance.”
She noted that, “this is in accordance with contemporary policing, partnership with different stakeholders, particularly in sharing of information and promoting gender at all levels- this way success to gender equality will be achieved.”
Officers agreed on continuous review of gender related cases, their causes and come up with new means of addressing gender related challenges.
