The National Electoral Commission has approved RPF’s Paul Kagame, Green Party’s Frank Habineza and private Philippe Mpayimana as the only candidates eligible to contest for the August presidential polls.
The trio were confirmed candidates on Friday, July 7th, 2017 after fulfilling all requirements recommended by the electoral body to join the race for the golden spot at the top of the state.
Kagame and Habineza were provisionally confirmed last week while the additional and private candidate Mpayimana was later approved on the deadline day to make the final list, which sees the likes of Gilbert Mwenedata, Diane Shima Rwigara and comic Fred Barafinda miss out on the list after failing to meet the NEC’s requirements to make the cut.
NEC Chairperson Prof Kalisa Mbanda, said the approval was made after the Commission checked all aspiring candidates’ requirement to see whether they meet NEC’s demands but, finally, only three were given green light having met the requirement, while the rest commonly failed to collect the total number of signatures from the communities countrywide.
The final list means only three candidates will be able to compete since there will be no more chance for Rwigara Junior, Barafinda and Mwenedata to tour for signatures collection after they were given enough time to do so, but in vain.
Out of the 600 signatures required by NEC, Mbanda said Rwigara only collected 572 signatures, including some of the deceased supporters. Mwenedata collected 522 signatures while Barafinda was able to get only 300
The elections campaigns for the approved candidates will start next week on July 14, 2017 until August 3rd before the elections are held on August 3rd for the Diaspora community and August 4th for the local community.
