Nzamwita Toy Ntabwoba, a prominent lawyer in Kigali, has been shot dead by Rwanda National Police; The incident occurred Friday morning at around 3:00am when knocked down a checkpoint.
Police said in a brief statement that Nzamwita, who had taken alcohol, rammed into a checkpoint and knocked down a police officer who was trying to stop him.
“Rwanda national Police regrets the loss of life in this unfortunate incident and conveys condolences to the family of the deceased.” Police said.
The law enforcement body said the deceased “Violated a traffic police checkpoint at KCB junction near Kacyiru,” hence attracting gunshots from cops.
According to the statement “Officers at the checkpoint shot at the car aiming to stop it but the driver continued driving; unfortunately he was shot dead in the process.”
The shooting is likely to attract considerable public concern about the cops’ ability to exercise restraint while enforcing road safety while further investigations are ongoing into the incident.
