Researchers with the Ministry of Natural Resources, point out mining and sand exploitation as primary factors likely to damage Sebeya river, unless, serious measures toward its protection are taken.
The catchment of Sebeya river is very crucial to the citizens of Western Province living in the surroundings of this river. There are extracted, in this river, mines, fragile, sand and so on.
The program officer, (Officer Water for growth Rwanda Sebeya Catchment), Mukasine Beatrice highlights the importance of this river among others in sector of tourism and mining but also talked about factors which might lead to its damaging.
“Non well caught rainwater, floods resulting from mining conducted in disorder, extraction of sand in non technical mode, inadequate land terracing ,…” she said
Some of the mining practitioners, sand extractors who are often held responsible for this issue, promise they are going to change their way of working but also say they still need special skills from people in charge.
Niyibizi John, The head of federation of cooperatives of sand extractors in Sebeya River says “well we know our works may impact on water of this river but we really need special skills in order to run our activities professionally”
In one day dialogue of environmental and natural resources practitioners both parties decided to jointly take measures toward the protection of the catchment of Sebeya river such as forestation, anti-erosion , to provide training for people whose activities might have any impact on Sebeya river etc.
Murenzi Janvier, the vice-mayor of Rubavu district in charge of economy said “we would like to ask everyone to understand that safeguarding Sebeya river is their own responsibility”
