It is three years since Rubavu Modern Slaughterhouse has been out of water while people operate in it day after day.
Janvier Twahirwa, the president of Cooperative d’Abattage Moderne de Rubavu which operates in the Gisenyi-based slaughterhouse, told Bwiza.com that the cooperative’s butchery business is getting affected by the lack of water in the slaughterhouse.
He said, “Every day we rent a car for water transport far away, and sometimes we run out water and end up using Kivu Lake water. The meat we sell should carry the required standards through better processing, and the buildings we are operating in require us big quantity of water where we would pay over Rwf 300 000 at WASAC before. The responsible administration is aware of our problem and we are still waiting to see if something good can be done because a working in a water-free slaughterhouse looks no different from operating in banana leaves”
Joseph Sematabaro, the WASAC employee in Rubavu, says this is not the only slaughterhouse which operates butchery activities without water, but admits the problem for this slaughterhouse may be connected to the common issue of the whole Mbugangari Cell, in which it operates, too, where the whole area has ran out of water for a long time.
He promises to find the solution for the case, saying, “The problem [water shortage] has been getting more serious because the number of people in the area was dramatically increasing where water can’t reach the entire community in the area. And, in addition, there are some water pipes that have been damaged by Congolese building at the DRC-Rwanda little cross border. So, meanwhile, we are waiting for the district’s permission to get where we can trace new water pipes”
The water sanitation and distribution body vows that Gisenyi itself could see the water consumption increased by to m3 24 000, from m3 9000 that it was using since 1986.
Rubavu Modern Slaughterhouse is considered among 8 biggest slaughterhouses in the country, where it can supply meat of between 60 and 70 cows a day.
