Since the construction of the Shagasha tea factory in 1965, it is this year that farmers begin to consume the tea they produce. Three months ago, members of COOPTHE Shagasha and UMUCYAGI cooperatives have abandoned the consumption of tea traditionally processed in the mortar.
Before, Shagasha COOPTHE administrators lamented that they did not consume well-treated tea when it is the product of their harvest, testifying that they did not know its taste for more than 52 plants is here.
“We are recommended to increase production and quality. How can we increase the quality of something that we do not even know the taste? Why do we grow tea without consuming it? “, A farmer says.
The factory administration recognizes this is not normal for farmers to spend 52 years working with the factory without knowing the taste of their crops, buying tea from elsewhere.
Azarias Ruberwa, in charge of processing tea in the factory, told Bwiza.com that for three months the farmers consume the well-treated tea. The factory knew that they had just spent several years and lamented.
” We knew it was a serious problem of growing plants and not benefiting from its product. From their grievances to the factory, we agreed with the farmers to give them the tea processed, pack it and sell it to the neighboring population of the factory so that it enjoys the taste and quality”, he said.
One kilogram of the treated tea is sold at 2,200 Frws. A half and a quarter are also available at 1,100 Frws and 550 Frws respectively to facilitate the population to buy them at a lower cost.
The case of producing without taste of the crop is common among farmers of industrial crops like coffee, tea and even rice. The factory owners are only interested in their interests, forgetting producers, who can help to improve production in quality and quantity.
