For these presidential elections of 4th august 2017, COMESA(COmmon Market for Eastern and Southern Africa) has deployed a short-term election observer mission to the Presidential elections in Rwanda. The team says rallies are well organized in a peaceful manner, and thanks the ruling party to detail about promises of the last term.
The delegation of twenty, is led by Bishop Mary Nkosi from Malawi, they arrived in Kigali on Thursday 27th July 2017, to leave on Sunday 6th August 2017. They include officials from COMESA Member States, diplomatic missions accredited to COMESA and staff from the COMESA Secretariat.
Muzinge N Chibomba from Zambia, says delegation members are from six countries, and plans an official launch on Monday 31st July 2017.
In these two days, they have been attending rallies. One of the team says rallies are well organized in a peaceful manner, and thanks the ruling party to detail about promises of the last term.
During this period, they will observe the concluding stages of the pre-election activities including voting, vote counting and declaration of election results, and the immediate post-election period.
As part of its objectives, the delegation will consult electoral stakeholders that include political parties, security, the election management body, civil society and media, among others.
The delegation will also exchange views with the diplomatic community as well as with other election observers. The team will be deployed in various geographical areas to cover as much ground as possible beyond Kigali in order to have a balanced and objective view of the whole electioneering process.
The observation process will be guided primarily by the constitution and legal framework of Rwanda, as read with relevant international and regional instruments including the COMESA Guidelines on Election Observation.
