Seven inmates, at Kimironko Prison in Gasabo District , have repotedly been injured following fire incident that took place at the prison premises.
The incident took place on Friday morning, March 31st 2017, forcing the prison security department staff rushing the inmates outside to prevent them form being affected by the fire until police arrived with firefighters to put out the fire.
The inmates were assembled at the road nearby, and was immediately blocked, meaning that no vehicle nor pedestrians were allowed to pass by the road until the fire was off.
In the meantime, inmates have been evacuted to a separate wing until the fire is completely extinguished.RCS Commissioner General George Rwigamba told thew media that seven people were injured in the fire at Gasabo Prison (Kimironko)
He said three makeshift structures were gutted, leavind inmates’ property destroyed.
No cause has been established yet but Rwigamba said more developments will be communicated as they try to get to the bottom of what could have caused the morning fire
Kimironko prison is attacked by fire few months since it also broke into Nyarugenge Prison, commonly known as 1930, leading to back to back gunshots to prevent iunmates from escaping the area. During that time, two were injured.
The same fire incidents also happened to Muhanga Prison in 2015, Rubavu Prison, and more prisons countrywide, leaving different properties burned.
