The visit of Pascal Barandagiye, Burundian Minister of internal affairs to refugee camp in Uganda ended with a press conference at Ugandan Prime minister’s office. In presence of the Minister of Uganda in charge of refugees, the outcome is that “forced repatriation is not possible”. The Government of Uganda assures Burundian refugees a permanent and safe asylum, till problems in Burundi are over, or refugees decide to repatriate voluntarily. No one will be expelled.
This is in respect of the 1951 UN Convention on refugees, the 1969 OUA Convention on specific aspect of refugee problems in Africa, and the 2006 refugee act. All speculate that the return of refugees should be to safety, dignity and voluntary.
