A Ugandan king is facing terrorism, aggravated robbery, murder, attempted murder and 8 other charges. The King of Rwenzururu Charles Wesley Mumbere appeared in court in Jinja a town in eastern Ugandan.
All charges are related to the recent clashes in the town of Kasese where up to 100 civilians and police officers were killed.
Supporters including MPs from his home region and opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye packed the court for the king’s second appearance.
Charles Wesley Mumbere was arrested on November 27 following a raid by security forces on his palace in Kasese town, in the west of Uganda.
Clashes between the king’s guards and the army left up to 100 people dead and over 100 others in police detention.
The government accuses the kingdom of recruiting and training militants seeking to break away from Uganda, to create their own republic, an accusation the kingdom denies. The king has been remanded to prison custody till December 28.
