The Western Region Police Commander (RPC) Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Emmanuel Karasi has appealed to commercial motorcyclists and cyclists to always be cautious of their passengers’ safety and that of other road users as well as enhance their partnership with security organs.
He made the remarks on November 12, during a meeting with over 1500 commercial motorcyclists and cyclists operating in Rubavu town. The meeting was preceded by Umuganda where commercial motorcyclists and cyclists joined police officers in cleaning up neighbourhoods n Rubavu town.
In his address, ACP Karasi said; “You should always keep in mind that you are not the sole users of the roads. You, therefore, have a responsibility to ensure not only safety of your passengers but for every road users.”
The Regional Police Commander noted that most road accidents are related to over speeding, use of cell phones, overloading, and drunkardness and warned meeting attendants to keep away from such tendencies.
“Violating traffic rules clearly means you are putting lives of road users at risk. Always respect sign posts and the rights of pedestrians. Remember to always have all the required licenses before you join the transportation business and ensure your motorcycle or bicycle is in a proper mechanical condition that won’t cause an accident,” ACP Karasi said.
He reminded motorcyclists to not let any of their colleague take passengers without a helmet and a reflector jacket.
The head of motorcyclists’ union in the Western region, Sentibagwe Gafora told his colleagues that public safety is the cornerstone of their business; “We cannot work in an insecure environment, for our business to prosper, we need to be part of crime prevention.”
