Rubavu:  A women, whose hand was cut by her husband, gets support


Ruth Nyirazirikana lives with disability that has been caused by her husband while cutting her hand. She was given home materials, health insurance, and livestock, worth 150,000rwfs.

Pacifique Ishimwe, representative of CNF (Conseil National des femmes) in Rubavu district declares that Ruth was given this assistance in order to fight  against domestic violence in Mudende Sector.

“After we shared views on domestic violence in Mudende Sector, Binungwe cell Mwirima village, we proposed that Nyirazirikana should be given assistance in order to help others avoiding domestic violence. She has one hand because of her husband who cut her hand and he was sentenced on 20 years imprisonment. We gave her domestic equipments, sheep and foods and an envelope of 32.000 Rwandan francs. All are equivalent to 155.000rfw” she says.

She also adds that before this incident, in this sector, we had found a dead girl who was killed after being raped.

Other women in this session say that they decide to fight domestic violence with different families in this sector, especially domestic abuse towards women.

Kezzie Mujawimana declares “Nyirazirikana’s husband was terrible. He gave her many scars with a machete and cut her hand. The neighbors did not want to secure her and they did not support her we say never again to domestic violence”.

“In June 2017, my husband, Imanihaye cut my hand with a machete. I used to ask him where the money goes, he became angry till he cut me.  We have 3 children, I live with disabilities and I am unable to work for my family but I acknowledge to the government of Rwanda for this help.” Says Nyirazirikana.
