Security Organs officials train on drones introduction in Rwanda Airspace

On 21 July 2016, 33 officials from National Security Organs concluded a 3 day Workshop that had been organized by the Ministry of Defense, and was conducted under the theme “Drone Industry, Management and Control in Rwanda”.

The aim of the workshop was to provide to the participants practical information on operating Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) commonly known as drones, and related airspace management, with the view of identifying and prioritizing minima aspects, necessary for Rwanda to host and operate UAVs now and in the future.

The workshop had been officially opened on 19 July 2016 by the Air Force Chief of Staff, Brig Gen Charles Karamba. He noted that” the workshop is the first of its kind and it is at the frontier of modern and evolving technology of employing drones in various fields to play a part in the development of our country”.

The closing ceremony of workshop was presided over by the Director of Rwanda Civil Aviation Authority (RCAA), Col Silas Udahemuka. In his remarks, Col Udahemuka revealed that RCAA has introduced new regulations for the remotely piloted aircraft systems, popularly known as drones. He assured that in coming up with those regulations, “the RCAA took the national safety and security needs into account”.

Major Asifiwe Kamasa, flights Inspector official at RCAA commented that the workshop was a kind of awareness especially for Security Organs to be aware of this technology, having drones integrated in the airspace.

The just concluded workshop was attended by officials from Rwanda Defense Force, Rwanda National Police, National Intelligence Security Services and Rwanda Civil Aviation Authority.
