UNHCR to inspect Congolese refugees ahead of leaving Rwanda
United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) in Rwanda intends to carry out checkups on Congolese refugees who willingly wish to leave Rwanda.
UNHCR says it has already established the group in charge of fulfilling the task.
The director of refugee affairs unit at the Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugee affairs (MIDMAR), Jean Claude Rwahama said the initiative was refugees’ idea
“It is ordinary matter. Refugees have their rights to go home any time they wish to. Our role is to inform them about homeland security status “he said
“We let them aware of security status in their native regions, it is not all the regions that are not secure in DR Congo” he added
Rwahama emphasized the leave has nothing to do with recent riot in Kiziba Camp that resulted into 11 tragic deaths,80 injuries including eight police officers.
Recently, another refugee died following altercations with Rwanda National Police with what labeled violent youth groups within the Camp.
Kiziba Camp hosts about 17,000 refugees since 1996
