A 25-year-old man from Rubengera Sector in Karongi District located in Western part of the country has been arrested on suspicion of killing his 77-year-old mother by stabbing her with a knife.
The incident occurred in Gitwa Village, Mataba Cell, Rubengera Sector, on September 30, 2026.
The Rubengera Sector authorities were informed of the woman’s death at around 5 p.m. and immediately went to the scene together with security organs.
Neighbours said the young man had for some time been threatening to kill his mother. They said the woman had even given him her inheritance in an attempt to calm him down, but he later sold it.
Some neighbours also said that, out of concern for her safety, the woman had left her home and moved into rented accommodation on the advice of people close to her. She had returned home four days before her death.
The Executive Secretary of Rubengera Sector, Ayabagabo Faustin, told local newspaper that as soon as the authorities received the information, local authorities and security organs went to the scene, where the young man was immediately arrested.
He said “He killed her by stabbing her with a knife. He is suspected of having a mental health condition, as he had previously sought treatment for it.”
However, information regarding his mental health remains an assumption by the authorities based on his history, while investigations into his mother’s death are ongoing.
Ayabagabo expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and urged residents to promptly inform local authorities whenever they become aware of a situation that could pose a security risk, particularly in households experiencing conflicts or involving individuals displaying behaviour that could endanger others.
The young man is being held at the Rubengera RIB station as investigations continue, while the deceased’s body was taken to Kibuye Hospital for examination.
